The Citrus Green Smoothie

Okay, I’m gonna do some real talk before I get to this smoothie recipe. To be honest, writing this blog post was really hard. You might think, “it’s just a smoothie recipe Ashley, what’s so difficult about writing down ingredients and directions?” THIS recipe isn’t hard, but the fact that I’ve sat down to write numerous blog posts over the past two weeks and none of them have felt good enough has been extremely discouraging. And so, I feel like I’m “settling” on writing this recipe. To be honest, I don’t even have a pre-blurb in mind for this post...is this what writer’s block feels like? On a bigger scale, I'm struggling with feelings of guilt and not feeling good enough because I don’t want to let you guys, the Root & Sprout community down, and I don’t want to let my beautiful partner down either. I/we pride ourselves on putting out good, quality, real content every week and today it feels like I'm coming up short. So today it's important that I practice what I preach and I'm letting myself be vulnerable - I'm just going to let my perfection tendencies go and let it be. I'm going to wrap up this short, vulnerable, feelings-filled paragraph and send it out into the Root & Sprout universe and know that it's okay. Thank you for reading this and allowing me to have space to be open to you, thank you for understanding, and thank you for your continued love and support!

Okay, that's enough real talk, let’s go!

Today’s recipe is based on change. I’m a person who is pretty in-tune with her body and know when it's asking for changes or adjustments - I don’t always listen because I have a hard time with change, but I often hear the message. I had been hearing this little voice for awhile where my smoothie's were concerned, and the other day I also just so happened to run out of my usual smoothie supplies - thanks for the push universe! This not-so-unusual scenario of running out of groceries made me step out of my comfort zone to get a little creative.

Enter the Green Citrus Smoothie. Based on items I only had around our kitchen, this blend ended up being very simple, accessible and affordable: orange, lemon, banana, spinach (which you can purchase from us here) and ginger. Guys, it was seriously so delicious and oh so fresh! Also, added bonus points, because you're getting three (yes THREE) full servings of your fruits/vegetables in one glass! Yahoo!

If you're entering the green smoothie world, this one is for you - it's light and not so heavily concentrated on greens like my Green Spirulina Smoothie (which I would still recommend trying out). For the past few weeks I’ve been drinking this smoothie for breakfast on the weekends and during the week I’ve been having it just before lunch and my digestive system has welcomed and enjoyed the change. And, even though it scorching hot in the Canadian prairies and it's hard to think about winter, this smoothie's powerful Vitamin C properties will also serve you well when you’re getting ready to fight off those pesky cold and flu virus’s. Win-win!
